60.5 Grant writing, social media, & marketing

Hey everyone,

So wrapping up year 5 with a bang. Check out the three highlights and everything that's happening with DC PALs for the rest of the month!!

*DCCAH Grant Writing Assistance
*Social Media Club DC
*Nonprofit Marketing Bank

*Potential Happenings
*Present Happenings
*Ephemeral Happenings
*Future Happening

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

"DCCAH staff conduct general workshops where you learn everything you need to know about DCCAH and the steps to take to submit a grant application. At these workshops, staff and applicants discuss each opportunity that DCCAH offers to assist DC artists and arts organizations in sharing their creativity. To assist grant recipients, workshops will also include detailed instruction on how to properly complete final reports due at the end of each fiscal year."

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

"Social Media Club's primary mission is to expand digital media literacy, promote standard technologies, encourage ethical behavior and share best practices. We bring together journalists, publishers, communications professionals, artists, amateur media creators, citizen journalists, teachers, students, tool makers, and other interested collaborators.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

"A Marketing Bank is a a single location where you store all of the stuff that you need, and that you are often asked to provide to others. Building your marketing bank will save you tons of time, because you’ll always know where to look for that logo, program description, color palette, etc. And you can also send staff and volunteers right to it, so you aren’t constantly forwarding files to others, saving even more time. You can store your bank on a shared drive, ideally where others can access it remotely."

You may already know what to do with the data in terms of evaluating your social media strategies and goals, but even if you don't, either you or someone else will, soon :-)

58.5: Springing forward :-)

Hey everyone,

What a difference a year makes. And I'm not just saying that because it's my birthday!! Looking at last year's bulletin, the Brookland Artspace Lofts were still under construction and the Cultural Development Corporation was having info sessions at Dance Place and the Source Theatre, a DC PAL was organizing a benefit fundraiser for victim's in Japan of last year's tsunami.

And then there's everything we do day-by-day, week-by-week, from the absurd to the profound. Forgive me for waxing poetic, but I appreciate the constant reality check you all give me in terms of what it is that we as a community of artists do, here in DC. It's a great intersection of local, regional, national and international work, and anyone who attended and/or participated in Intersections can probably speak to that. And it helps give me perspective when it's so easy to get lost in the day-to-day stuff, going from finishing one performance just in time to get ready for the next.

So thank you, thank you, thank you. And with that, here's the mid-month bulletin:

*Petition to restore DC Arts funding
*Intrinsic Impact and the Value of Art
*Facebook tips

*Potential Happenings
*Present Happenings
*Ephemeral Happenings
*Future Happening

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

*Petition to restore DC arts funding

As a city of 600,000 residents with 15-20 million tourist visitors per year, the arts industry is a vital partner in each ward and the city’s overall economic development. Yet without sufficient arts funding, we simply will no longer be able to continue to provide these services.

http://www.change.org/petitions/washington-area-artists-arts-organizations-and-audiences-ask-mayor-gray-to-restore-funding-for-dc-arts-humanities

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

*Intrinsic Impact and the Value of Art

"We make art because we believe it makes better human beings. We make art because we believe it makes being human better. So why do we spend so much energy quantifying the economics of what we do, and so little time quantifying the impact?"

I had to share this one again, as the Dissemination Tour comes through the area, Mar 22 at Arena Stage, presented in association with theatreWashington. I'll be there.

56: A New World

Hey there,

It's 2012, and the world hasn't ended yet. Needless to say, it's certainly going to be an interesting time. I feel compelled to share with you, something I've shared on my FB timeline, so apologies if you've already seen this. If not, it's Google's Zeitgeist video of 2011, and it was certainly a reminder of just how much happened last year.

Here's what's going on this month:

*Remembering Peter Fox
*Nancy Hanks Lecture
*DC PALs Social Profiles

*Present Happenings
*Ephemeral Happenings
*Future Happenings

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

*Remembering Peter Fox

Yesterday, I woke up to news about the passing of Peter Fox, a member of this group…I'll just share what I posted yesterday.

"Remembering Peter Fox and reflecting on what might've been lost in body, but not in spirit. His love, inspiration, and music will continue to change the world as he lives on in the hearts of everyone he's touched. I'm blessed and thankful for being a part of the GMCW family and getting to know such a truly beautiful person/artist."

Here's a clip of him participating in Signature Theatre's Signature Idol in 2010:

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

"Acclaimed actor and arts advocate Alec Baldwin will deliver the 25th Annual Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy. Receive two free tickets to the lecture with your Arts Advocacy Day registration or reserve your tickets online today."

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

So a website is part of the long-term strategy for DC PAL, but in the meantime, I want to offer another benefit to provide a database of sorts for anyone who wants to share.  What I need, if you're interested, is your name as you would like it (since it will generate your address as well), the code for any social media badges and profiles you would like, and what labels you would like for your page.  Go to the link below to see an example, and message me if you have any questions as well as any suggestions or thoughts. Hopefully this will be yet another anchor for your social media presence online, as well as a resource for people to find each other.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Potential Happenings:

Applications Due (Capital Fringe Festival) - Jan 6

The Tempest (Lean & Hungry Theater) - Jan 8
To request an audition time, email headshot and resume to leanandhungrytheater@gmail.com. Previous professional Shakespeare experience is required.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Present Happenings:

Death by Disco (Mystery Dinner Playhouse) - Dec 2 to Mar 2 / DC PAL: Luke Tudball

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Ephemeral Happenings:

Into the Woods: In Concert! (w/ Nu Sass Productions) - Jan 13 & 14 / DC PAL: Aubri O'Connor

The Fourth Annual Capital Jam (@ Dance Exchange) - Jan 16 / DC PAL: Ilana Silverstein

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

I don't know about you, but I'm certainly excited for this year, with everything that's happening.  So let me know what's happening with you, next bulletin is going out the 16th.

Until next time,

JR
