Bulletin 37: June is bustin' out all over

Hey there,

Welcome to the beginning of Year 4 for DC PAL. To those who've been here and have joined since the beginning, thank you. And if you've joined in the past month and this is your first bulletin, welcome. :-)

This month's highlights:

*DC PAL of the Month
*Graduation Kudos
*Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra
*Source Festival 2010

*Potential Happenings
*Present Happenings
*Ephemeral Happenings
*Future Happenings

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

DC PAL of the Month:

Where: "I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. But, if you mean my heritage--that ever-present question: Where are you really from?--my mom is from Rangoon, Burma and my dad is from Pittsburgh, PA." In the area: " It will be 10 years next year. I arrived in DC in '01."

What: "I studied Dance and French Language & Literature at the University of Maryland (Bachelor's) and am currently studying Arts Management at American University (Masters)."

Why: "In the last few weeks alone, I was really inspired by the grace and commitment to authenticity of Christopher K. Morgan, a CityDance Ensemble member, in his choreographic retrospective. Also, I was so moved by the sheer brilliance of Paige Hernandez in the Hegira's "Paige in Full," a 60-minute autobiographical work of hip-hop theatre with Hernandez and her brother, DJ Nick tha 1da, performing side-by-side in perfect harmony. But, if I'm honest with myself, a lot of my own creative work comes from an obsession with sensuality and sexuality and what drives those things within us (emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually). Both my dance and literary work is deeply connected to sex and sexuality, although I still haven't figured out exactly why that's true. I just have finally come to terms with the fact that it's at the crux of my work."

When: Since November, I've mostly worked on Sulu DC, which is a monthly showcase of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (http://www.tinyurl.com/suludc). The last full-length performance I was in was a show with the Dutch choreographer, Nita Liem, of the company Don't Hit Mama. I was fortunate enough to work with Nita, Holly Bass, and the Beat Ya Feet Kings for a production during Hip-Hop Theater Festival last summer (2009). I am currently working on a special edition of Sulu DC for this year's Smithsonian Folklife Festival (summer 2010), whose theme this year is Asian Pacific Americans: Local Lives, Global Ties. Our July 3rd show at the festival will feature The Pinstriped Rebel (DJ), Yoko K., iLL-Literacy, Sulu DC (Simone Jacobson, Gowri K., Alex Cena, and Jenny Lares), Kilusan Bautista, Lily Bee and SNRG. Regie Cabico and Jen Kwok will host. It will be much like our monthly showcases, except it will be family-friendly, feature a four-way collaboration between some Sulu DC-ers and will be on the Mall for thousands of people! More on Folklife here: http://www.festival.si.edu/2010/asian_pacific_americans.aspx

Random Fact: "I used to surf when I was a kid. Pretty damn well, too! :) "

Affiliations:

* managing editor for Words. Beats. Life: The Global Journal of Hip-Hop Culture (www.wblinc.org).

DC PAL Charles Phaneuf is a member of the BCJO.

"The new Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra is a 16 piece big band co-founded by baritone saxophonist Brad Linde, trumpeter Joe Herrera and club owner Omrao Brown. Since April 19, 2010, the BCJO has presented a variety of music from big band literature and feature some of the District's best musicians on Monday nights at the historic Bohemian Caverns. Music from Ellington, Basie, Strayhorn, Thad Jones, Oliver Nelson, Maria Schneider and originals by band members will embrace and challenge the tradition of big band repertoire. "

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

"For over two decades, Source Theatre Company's Washington Theatre Festival was an incubator and a catalyst for virtually every major theatre artist working in DC today. It was a place for new voices to be heard and for actors, playwrights and directors to collaborate and network. Whether any given piece was successful or not, there were two undeniable traits: artists from all walks of life were working together and taking creative risks."

Bulletin 34: Music makes the people come together

"Music mix the burgeoisie and the rebel"

Yes, I just started this bulletin with Madonna, but it's relevant!! Oh yeah, you might've noticed the logo, too...will release a survey in the next bulletin or so to see what your reactions are to it. But like roommates in college, give it a couple of weeks before you settle on how it makes you feel. :-)

And so, Happy Music in Our Schools Month :-) Also, if you haven't caught the cover of March's issue of American Theatre, it features a shot of local performers Madeleine Carr (also a DC PAL member) & Rex Daugherty, from Solas Nua's "Disco Pigs".

Otherwise, there's plenty happening in March!! The DC PAL of the month will be included in the mid-month bulletin due to a lack of timeliness on my part in contacting the individual.

*Advocacy, Art & Community at Intersections: A New America Arts Festival
*Music in Our Schools Month
*2010 Arts Advocacy Day

*Members' Current Events/Performances/Productions
*Members' Limited Engagements
*Members' Upcoming Events/Performances/Productions in March

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Advocacy, Art & Community at Intersections: A New America Arts Festival

A disclaimer. I and DC PAL are in no way affiliated with Intersections. But I wanted to highlight the following. Definitely check out Intersections: A New America Arts Festival's final week.

But, particularly take note of Kathleen Gonzales''s work (who is not a DC PAL...not yet, anyway :-D ), "The Bridges of Bodies" as it's been extended, and was originally supposed to close this past weekend. Kathleen Gonzales performs it in English, French and Haitian Creole, and follows the story of Marie-Therese as she returns to her native country of Haiti to put together the pieces of the puzzle of her past.

I mention this because proceeds from the production are going to Haiti Earthquake Relief, and I felt the need to highlight what I think is a wonderful intersection of advocacy, art, and community (both local and global).

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

2010 MIOSM Theme: "Music! Just Imagine..."

Use the menu on the right [of the page linked above] to find out how to participate in MIOSM and promote support for school music."

"The 23rd annual Arts Advocacy Day is the only national event that brings together a broad cross-section of America’s cultural and civic organizations, along with hundreds of grassroots advocates from across the country, to underscore the importance of developing strong public policies and appropriating increased public funding for the arts.

*Let your voice be heard when you visit your members of congress to make the case for the arts and arts education.
*Take advantage of opportunities to network with colleagues from your state and across the country.
*Increase your knowledge of how to advocate and influence decision makers.

Join other arts advocates from your state to make the case for arts and arts education to your members of Congress."

Check out the DC PAL search engine, and send me a message with any personal websites you'd like to add to a special DC PALs search engine I'll make public in May.

And if you're on Digg, Meetup, Reddit, Stumbleupon, Twitter, or any other of the social media sites I am exploring, friend or follow DC PAL. AND if you would like an alternative way of receiving your bulletins, you can get them on blogspot at dcpalbulletins[dot]blogspot[dot]com.

Definitely looking to continue making this community/group the Web 2.0 hub for what's going on with the DC Area's performing arts scene, but that has only been possible by connecting you to as much of each other's content as possible. So thanks to all who have, and continue to let me know what's happening!!

Until next time,

Bulletin 33.5: Art Loves Me...Art Loves Me Not...

Hey everyone,

Hope you all are free (or at least almost free) from the thrall of last week's 2nd coming of the Snowpocalypse.

As you may have noticed, the terms referring to listed events/performances/productions/etc. has been changed to "happenings", to truly reflect DC PAL's "less is more" aesthetic with regards to the way information is displayed and shared. Auditions are now Potential, Current is Present, Limited is Ephemeral, Upcoming is Future, and Out-of-Town is Distant.

The links section have also been edited to remove the "http://www."prefix to websites and partitioned, in an effort to make the information less cluttered and more accessible.

That being said, here's this month's bulletin:

*Fan Page
*This month's Discussion Topic: Showmances
*The Survey
*Intersections
*Dance Bethesda

*Potential Happenings
*Present Happenings
*Ephemeral Happenings
*Future Happenings

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Fan Page

First, no I'm not getting rid of the group page. There will be different content available at each. The group page will still be primarily geared towards sharing information among peers about our work. Second, the fan page will not have a monthly bulletin, and is geared towards both performers and non-performers (i.e. audience members and administrators). Third, the fan page will have a monthly event page starting in May that will list all the events going on each month which fans can RSVP too. This is to supplement the lack of info on "happenings" which group members can see on the info tab, and to compliment the monthly bulletin which the group receives in their mailbox. Fans will info on only "the happenings", as an event invite.

Also, if you or any company/group/etc. you're involved with has a Fan page, let me know so that it can be added to the Favorite Pages for DC PAL. And if it's a group you're either a company member of, founded, etc., or your own personal Fan page, as an artist, mention that so that it can be added to the DC PALs Favorite Pages, a Fan page going public May 10, highlighting organizations DC PAL members have a significant connection to.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

February's Topic: "Showmances"

Urban Dictionary defines "showmance" as:

A romance developed between two actors during the filming of a movie/production of a play that ends directly after the project has ended.

What've been your experiences with showmances? Have they been good or bad for you? Do you look for romance amongst other performers, or do you separate work and play when it comes to life off the stage?

Now please let's agree to disagree from the get-go here. And no names, or any amount of description that might indirectly identify any people you might refer to. Just looking for people to share experiences or thoughts, without judgment or reproach.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

The Survey:

I'm keeping the survey open a little longer. Just want to give more people a chance to fill out in case you missed/forgot about/didn't have time to answer the 5 questions.

DC PAL of the Month

Where: Born in upstate NY, moved to MD at 12, moved into DC after college graduation; been in the city three years
What: Theatre at the University of Maryland, College Park

Why: "As a character actor, I love to see someone completely reinvent themselves with every character they play; especially when they do it for several characters in a single show."

When: Last seen in Les Miserables (Signature Theatre), can catch him next in The Adventures of Flat Stanley (Adventure Theatre) then, Mrs. Warren's Profession (Shakespeare Theatre)

Random fact: I have two great-uncles in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Affiliations: EMC

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

A Survey:

So just to try to get a better idea of the demographics of the group, I put together a li'l survey with 5 questions. Please take a moment, when you get the chance, to fill this out. As DC PAL gets ready to turn 3 in May, getting to know a little more about DC PALs will help to

Go here for the survey [link is not included as the survey is meant just for members of the FB group]

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Taxes:

So, especially for all you relatively fresh out of higher education arts professionals (or even some of you seasoned ones), there are a number of Free Filing services available, if you make under a certain amount. All can be found at the first link, but (if your AGI is $31,000 or under), I'm personally a fan of Turbo Tax: Freedom Edition. Unless otherwise stated, other tax preparation and e-file services are limited to those an AGI of $57,000 a year or less

Don't tell anyone yet, but as part of an effort to facilitate real-time connections, DC PAL is now on Meetup. While I've picked at least one event each month to go to, that in no way speaks to any other event being more or less worthwhile to attend. I also have a limited budget and time in which to see events, because otherwise I'd make it to everything listed in the group. This is meant for audience members to self-organize, but if (as an artist) you would like to organize a meetup and stick around after a show to get to know others in the group, then let me know and I'll set it up or even make you a co-organizer.

DC PAL Bulletin, Issue 32.5 (Mid-January '10)

DC PAL & Social Media 2.010 Initiatives

Twitter - You may have joined it, but figuring out a useful and consistent way to manage it was difficult until recently. Using Hootsuite to schedule tweets, DC PAL can now guarantee that for members who message me with events to list, will also get the following schedule tweets. For limited engagements, tweets will be sent out 1 week before, and then 2 days before. For all others, tweets will be sent out 1 week before, half-way through the run, and 2 days before closing weekend. The exception to this latter one are runs that are two weekends long, and then the second tweet will be omitted.

Google Custom Search Engine - DC PAL now has a dedicated search engine powered by google. You may now search for terms, and the DC PAL Search Engine will only utilize links provided on the group page to show you results for your search. Links which have been left out are online ticketing sites and other non-local web pages, which would provide skewed search results without a DC focus

Digg - DC PAL has a profile on Digg to provide another means to share relevant links. The difference between the Digg links and those I share on the actual FB group page, is that the Digg profile will only submit those articles/reviews/etc. with a local focus. This would leave out some of the more general links that are sometimes posted on the group page.

Keep an eye out for these profiles and more, in the Contact Info section on the group page.
